Asthma

We are currently developing an Asthma Free School Zone Project and look forward to working with local schools to reduce idling near schools as a way to reduce the asthma rates among our North Shore youth.

Some legal background: New York City and New York State have special idling laws that make it illegal to idle an engine for more than a set period of time. The specific laws are:

Idling Legislation - NYC Administrative Code 24-163 (1971)

Engine idling by any vehicle for more than 3 minutes anywhere in NYC, or more than 1 minute near NYC schools is prohibited, except when the temperature is less than 40 degrees F, or when an official vehicle is actively responding to an emergency.

NYS Education Law 3637 (2007)

School buses must not idle on school grounds or next to a school.
